About Us

The North Carolina Tigers play Australian Rules Football. Often confused with rugby, Australian rules football, or 'footy' as it is colloquially known, is a physical contact sport unlike any sport played in America, but which combines the best elements of soccer, ice hockey, basketball and football to make for a fast paced, exciting and highly skilled game.The game was developed over 100 years ago and continues to be played in Australia as almost a religious event (kind of like our football)! We play in a national competition under the United States Australian Football League (USAFL). We are in the Eastern Australian Football League (EAFL) Conference. Some teams comprise of many Aussies from big cities just wanting to play the game they grew up with. Some teams run year round, with financial support to match. We are different. Made up of mostly Americans, we all found this sport some weird way and collectively we represent the Carolina's against these larger, more developed, clubs. In the early years we were mostly the best players from the UNC and NCSU college teams along with a mix of other folks. These days we have advanced well beyond that to become a gathering place for players from a much wider area. We have over 40 active players and now travel nationwide. We hope you join us in this truly great time - whether it be in a game or at the pub!

The North Carolina Tigers are headquartered in Raleigh, North Carolina and actively promote and play Australian rules football across the state. The club was founded in November 1997, with the first training session in early Spring 1998. It was founded by an American who figured that the time was right for footy in the USA. History timeline of the NC Tigers Football Club1981 - The Origin of Raleigh Based FootySeth McElvaney watches Aussie rules football for the very first time. He was hooked immediately! November 1997 - The Crash Begins!Seth McElvaney officially starts the North Carolina Crash Football Club. Spring 1998 - First Football PracticeWith an advertisement placed in a local Raleigh newspaper, a handful of athletes partake in the first official Footy practice. September 1998 - The Club is Organized Off the FieldThe North Carolina Crash hold the first annual board meeting. The inaugural members were: President - Seth McElvaney Vice President - Glenn Fullager Treasurer - David Collings April 1999 - Richmond FC Gets Onboard!The North Carolina Crash Australian Rules Football Club becomes affiliated with the Richmond Tigers of the AFL. Consequently, the North Carolina Crash identity becomes the NORTH CAROLINA TIGERS. Richmond offers initial sponsorship assistance in the form of a set of Tigers jumpers (game uniforms) and footballs. October 16-17, 1999 - First Ever NationalsSeven players from the NC Tigers teamed up with the Carolina Hawks, Tri-Cities Saints and the Atlanta Kookaburras to form the Southern Crusaders at the 1999 USAFL National Championships. 22 teams from across the country descended on Cincinnati in what is surely the largest gathering of Aussie Rules players so far. Playing in Tri-Cities Saints jumpers, the Southern Crusaders were in Division II with 3 other teams. The Crusaders lost in the Division II final to the combined Baltimore/Washington contingent. June 24, 2000 - Tigers Beat the Number 2 Team in the CountryThe Tigers played host to the Nashville Kangaroos, a team unbeaten for the year against proven tough opposition, and beat them convincingly. The Tigers were without a number of their best players, and after the first quarter it looked like a walkover to Nashville. After what can only be described as a cowardice act by one particular Nashville player sent Tigers player Lee Angelelli to the hospital, the Tigers bounced back the best way they could and came back strong. An 8 goal last quarter sealed the match for the Tigers, and the biggest win to date. October 11, 2000 - The Jumpers Have ArrivedWe are now the proud owners of 27 Richmond football jumpers, now we can look like Tigers when we win our next tournament. Many thanks to Terry Grigg of Richmond F.C. for organizing them for us. October 13-14, 2001 - Tigers Go 2-1 at Nationals and Just Miss Out on a Finals BerthThe Tigers finished fifth in the nation at the recent USAFL National championships held in Washington DC. The Tigers lost to Denver, but pulled out convincing wins against the Nashville Kangaroos and the LeHigh Valley Crocodiles. Unfortunately Seattle in another pool finished with a slightly higher percentage keeping us out of the final four. Captain-Coach Martin Coventry wins the Division III Best Player Award. February 23, 2002 - First Ever US Inter-Collegiate Aussie Rules MatchHistory was made today in North Carolina, as UNC and NCSU played in the first ever U.S. collegiate Aussie Rules match. The experience of the UNC players showed through as they ran away easy winners over a tough NCSU squad, most of who were playing their first ever match. First night match under lights also. The Tigers proudly sponsor the nations' first two college footy teams - the University of North Carolina Australian Rules Football Club and the NC State Australian Rules Football Club. October 21, 2002 - Tigers Take 3rd in Division 3 NationalsThe Tigers brought home 3rd place in the 2002 National Tournament in Kansas City. Lose to Philly Crows after coming off a half time lead in the Semi Final. October 11-12, 2003 - Tigers are Defeated in the Division III National Championship Grand FinalThe Kansas City Power/New York Pies beat the North Carolina Tigers to capture the Division III National Australian Football Championship in the annual tournament, this year played in Kansas City. The Tigers put up a sterling effort as a scheduling error by the USAFL makes the Tigers play a 5-match weekend. Exhausted and with many injuries, the Tigers lose to a fresh and combined side, whose composition is dubious at best. Captain-Coach Martin Coventry wins the Division III Best Player Award. September 11, 2004 - Tigers Take 2nd Place in the Steel City Boomerang Cup!The North Carolina Tigers, renowned for tenacious team performances against difficult odds, emerged as the runners-up in the Steel City Australian Rules Football Tournament held on Saturday September 11, 2004. Playing with a mix of experience and desire, the young Tigers side proved to be arguably the surprise team at the event, which was held on a clear sunny day at St Vincents College in Latrobe, near Pittsburgh.October 2004 - USAFL NationalsTigers make Division 2, and Jason Heathcote wins the Division II Best Player Award. February 5, 2005 - First Metro Footy DraftThe Tigers held the Triangle's first ever North Carolina Metro Footy League Draft at Woody's on Friday night. The three teams, Capitals, Rams, Wolves, were filled as names were randomly drawn from a hat. The Club offers local footy action through the North Carolina Metro Footy League. The Wolves, Capitals, and Rams comprise a metro 9-a-side league with matches played monthly. Metro Footy is a scaled down version of Footy. Matches are played on a regulation size soccer field and have 9 players per side. All are welcome to try Metro Footy, before graduating to the Tigers. May 7, 2005 - NC Tigers First International MatchIt was a tough day for the Tigers as they played host to the Etobicoke Kangaroos (Toronto, Canada) in a pre-season matchup. Kangaroos 17.14.(116) def. Tigers 4.16.(40). October 1-2, 2005 - USAFL NationalsThe North Carolina Tigers earned the right to play in Division II again this year, seeded 3rd with Orange County, Philadelphia, and Seattle. Nationals were held in Milwaukee. October 7-8, 2006 - USAFL NationalsTigers make Division I status, and become the first USAFL club to rise from Division III to Division I. The 2006 North Carolina Tigers returned from the USAFL Nationals held in Las Vegas. With them are stories that will just have to stay in Vegas. However, the Tigers did bring back white match shorts, lots of good memories, a few injuries, and experience from playing some of the best teams in the Nation. October 13-14, 2007 - USAFL NationalsTo mark the United States Australian Football League's 10th Anniversary, the USAFL Board announced a USAFL Team of the Decade, a USAFL All-American Team of the Decade and Umpires of the Decade at our National Tournament in Louisville, Kentucky. Our own Rob Beyersdorf was named to the USAFL All-American Team of the Decade and Seth McElvaney was named to the Umpires of the Decade. Congratulations on those achievements! The North Carolina Tigers earned the right to play in Division II again next year, finishing with one win and two losses.Atlanta 6.1.37 defeat NC Tigers 5.6.36Minnesota 7.5-47 defeat NC Tigers 1.8.14NC Tigers 9.4-58 defeat Nashville 1.4-10 October 11-12, 2008 - USAFL NationalsAt the picturesque U.S. Air Force Academy, in Colorado Springs, CO, the North Carolina Tigers braved sub-freezing temperatures in Division II this year. The club finished 2-1, only being defeated by an invited Canadian team, Calgary. This was the best result ever for the Tigers, beating 2 top 10 teams in the process.Calgary 5.11-41 defeat NC TIgers 1.0.6NC TIgers 3.6.24 defeat Milwaukee 0.0.0 NC Tigers 5.3.33 defeat Dallas 0.5-5 October 10-11, 2009 - USAFL NationalsA very lobsided draw saw us finishing 0-3 at Nationals after a very promising year. What is What is Australian Rules Football?Australian Rules football, or 'footy' as it is colloquially known, is a physical contact sport unlike any sport played in America, but which combines the best elements of Ice Hockey, basketball and football to make for a fast paced, exciting and highly skilled game.

FieldBall The Field (known as "the ground")Aussie Rules is generally played on an oval field between 135 and 185 meters in length and 110 and 155 meters in width, although the sizes of grounds do vary. The MCG is considered to be the perfect ground. The boundary is marked with a white line drawn a few meters from the fence and the roaring crowd. At each end of the ground there are four posts consisting of two shorter outer posts and two taller inner posts. The inner posts are called the goal posts, the outer posts are the behind posts. CLICK FOR A PICTURE AND MORE INFOThe Ball (known as "the footy")The ball is an oval bladder covered with smooth leather, tanned for day use or colored visible yellow for night. It is slightly larger and rounder than the American or Canadian ball, as it was not designed to be thrown. The T.W. Players Players and their positionsA team consists of 18 players with four interchange players (substitutes) allowed on the bench. Free substitutions are allowed at any time during the match, through a "gate" in front of either bench. Players are deployed in five lines of three across the oval, with the remaining three players assigned to follow the ball as it moves around the ground. Each player lines up on his opposite (for example, Fullback on Fullforward). The players in each line are usually designated as being in either the left, center or right position in each line, relative to the direction of attack.The three players assigned to follow the ball as it moves around the ground are known as "followers" Their positions are referred to as: Ruckman: The Ruckman contests the 'ball-up' (Usually very tall and athletic).Ruck-Rover: The Ruck-rover attempts to receive the ball from the Ruckman and deliver the ball into attack (A good combination of speed and height).Rover: One of the hardest working players on the ground, the rover traditionally scouts the packs and sets up play by clearing the ball into attack. (Usually small, very fast and never tires) Although the players have designated positions, they are free to move anywhere on the ground, (no offside rule) when play is in progress. Scoring The ScoringA ball kicked between the two larger goal posts without being touched is a goal and scores 6 points. The ball is then returned to the center circle for a "ball-up." If the ball passes between the goal posts by any other means or through the behind posts then it is a behind, and it scores 1 point. If the ball hits the goal post, a behind is scored. If the ball is forced, or carried, but not kicked over the scoring line anywhere between the goal posts, a behind is scored. Following a behind, the ball is kicked back into play from within the goal-square. The opposing fullback usually delivers the kick. The score is given in three numbers. For example: 8.9 (57). The first number is the number of goals scored, worth 6 points each. The next number is the number of behinds at 1 point each and the final is the sum or the total score.

Starting Starting the GameThe game commences with each player standing in their designated position. The main umpire (referee) bounces the ball in the center of the ground. This can be compared to a tip-off in basketball, and the opposing ruck men leap to gain possession of the ball. The game then progresses in a wild free-for-all until a goal is scored and the ball returns to the center for another bounce.

KickHand Kicking and HandpassingThe Kick:Kicking can pass the ball quickly and effectively. This is different from American Football in that a kicking tee is never used and a kick is often taken while the player is running at or near full speed. TackleMark Tackling and MarkingTackling:Aussie Rules is a physical game, and players can be either 'bumped," from the ball using the hip and shoulder or tackled by grabbing any where above the knee or below the neck. Catching ("Marking") the Footy:A "mark" is another name for a catch, and can be taken over the head or against the chest. The ball cannot touch the ground, and must travel at least ten meters in the air. A mark entitles a player to an uncontested disposal of the ball. Marks are one of the spectacular elements of the game, as players' leap up on opponents backs to take 'screamers'.

Rules Wait, are there rules?Yes, there are some rules too! Some of the main rules are: •You cannot push a player in the back while he has the ball. •You cannot run more than 15 meters with the ball without bouncing it or touching it to the ground. •You must make a reasonable attempt to dispose of the ball. •You cannot tackle a player not in possession of the ball. •Finally, rough play outside of the laws of the game is severely penalized. This has been a brief description of the game. As with all sports, the best way to understand it is to either watch it, or even better by, getting involved!

The keepers of the Footy FAQ (frequently asked questions) as well as up to date information on TV broadcasting of footy coverage are located here. AFANA has recently started marketing footies, clothing, (including jumpers) books and videos of Australian Rules Football to members and non-members alike. If you become a member however, you can get discounts on the offered merchandise, and support the efforts of AFANA. These guys are largely responsible for there being any TV coverage at all in the US, so give them a visit. JULY 2011Tigers Give Top Ranked NY All They Could Handle Early Morrisville, NC - The North Carolina Tigers gave the New York Magpies an early scare in their game, Saturday, July 9th at Cedar Fork Park. The underdog Tigers came out and matched the traveling New York team kick for kick in the early going. Veterans Stephen Harper, Adrian Baluyot, and Albert Neimeyer all scored in the first quarter and Mark Griffin set the tone in the quarter by tormenting New York's front line. The Tigers regularly pushed the ball up field and had many uncapitalized scoring chances early. The early success of the Tigers forced the Magpies to change their strategy going forward, but the Tigers remained resilient in their upset bid. Stephen Harper added a second goal and Shane Bradley chipped in a goal to give New York a worthy contest. In the end, the Magpies pulled away, but the fiesty Tigers never stopped playing hard. Ross Pleban, Mark Griffin, and Scott Bradley all gave Harper a run for Best on the Field for the Tigers. Overall, it was a great day of footy capped by a great celebration at Woody's City Market where both teams met and relived the great game. NY 14.5.89 NC 5.6.36JUNE 2011NC Tigers versus Philadelphia (June 11 2011, Philadelphia PA)While the score looks pretty bad (and was), there were definitely some positives to take away from the weekend. Obviously, we had a limited travel squad going up - and on a hot weekend with the opponent having 25+ guys, it makes it an uphill battle for anyone. Philly gave us 4-5 guys each half to fill out the squad so we could play 18s. The first half they gave us a few newbies, and traded them in the second half for more veteran players.The most impressive part about the weekend (in my opinion), which the same thing could be said about the previous weekend, is the way we kept fighting and finish strong. In the first half, we were literally getting beat 100+ to nothing. Anyone could have said screw it, I'm hot, we're getting killed, I don't want to play anymore. But no. With a couple veteran players from the Hawks helping us out, we had a great second half. We came out fighting strong, got on the scoreboard and [I think] beat them in the second half. All we need are those few other guys on our team to make a difference. It is amazing how close we are to having such a great team. It was great to see the 14 guys we had fight tooth and nail to the end and not get down about the game. I appreciate everyone who made the trip. Even though we got beat, I think we had a great showing with the 14 who traveled with us. Thanks again to everyone who traveled up.NC Tigers 04.06.30Philly Hawks 22.17.149 2-1 Result in the Great Southern Football TournamentGame #1 v AtlantaThe Tigers officially began their season with a spirited road effort against the Atlanta Kookaburras. Despite a lethargic Tigers start that put the Kookaburras up by as many as 21 points early, the Tigers were able to come within a kick of a come from behind victory. Captain Jason Heathcote registered the first Tiger points of the year to propel the Tigers toward a comeback. Coach and field leader Mick Coysh lifted the team with a big goal to keep the Tigers within striking distance of the Kookaburras at the half. The Tigers began their big second half onslaught with a 40 meter bomb from Stephen Harper that split the middle uprights. The Tigers representative to this year’s national team, Paul Duncan, dominated in all aspects of the game and added a great goal. Veteran Steve Miller added a beauty as well off a brilliant pass by Heathcote to bring the team within 3 points of the lead with under a few minutes remaining. The Tigers controlled play for the remaining time, but ultimately fell to the Kookaburras 5.6.36 to 5.4.34, despite only giving up 3 points in the entire second half. The Atlanta team was a great host, and the Tigers will get a chance to even the score in July when the Kookaburras visit North Carolina.Goals: Michael Coysh (1), Paul Duncan (1), Stephen Harper (1), Jason Heathcote(1), Steve Miller (1)Game #2 v FloridaThe second game of the day saw a matchup of old rivals, the NC Tigers and the Florida Redbacks. Looking to avenge their narrow loss in the previous game, and their three losses to Florida last season, the Tigers came into this game with loads of energy and motivation. Quickly opening up a 1.4.10 (with a goal by Jason Heathcote) to 0.0.0 lead on the Redbacks, it looked like the Tigers would run away with this game. But Florida rallied back with three goals and a behind to take a halftime lead of 3.1.19 to 2.4.16. After a quick pep talk from Coach Mick, the Tigers took the field for the second half. After kicking too many behinds in the first half, the team scored five straight goals to open up a 7.4.46 to 3.1.19 lead in the second half. Goals were scored by Scott Bradley, rookie Roger Bryant, Matt Sherman, and Jason Heathcote. With the foot off the pedal, the Tigers coasted to their first victory of the season. Final score, 8.5.53 Tigers to 5.4.34 Redbacks.Goals: Jason Heathcote (5), Scot Bradley (1), Rob Bryant (1), Matt Sherman (1)Game #3 v Boston The Tigers came into the third game of the day tired but motivated to finish the day with a winning record, as well as exact revenge on a Boston team that had beat them in 2010. The game was set for 16 a side, with two 15 minute halves, shortened due to the tournament style and afternoon heat. The Tigers struck first with a goal from veteran Paul Duncan. But with the loss of Mark Griffin to injury, the Tigers lacked their best defender, and the Demon’s talented full forward responded with a goal of his own. Scott Bradley’s first goal of the game was again quickly equalized by the demons. However, a behind and a goal by captain Jason Heathcote had the Tigers 3.1.19 to the Demons 2.0.12 going into the half. Coming out of the half, Boston made an early push to take the lead with another goal, but a 1 point margin would be as close as they would get. The Tigers made a strong surge out of the center with quality rucking by rookie Alton Wright. Another goal by Scott was then followed by an outstanding mark and goal by rookie Rob Clayton. A final goal by Wes McCallister gave the Tigers a comfortable lead that a late Boston goal and rushed behind did nothing to diminish. We tackle Atlanta and Boston in a double header at Creel Park, Atlanta. The Tigers have not played Atlanta for a couple of years whilst Boston went 1-0 against the Tigers in 2010. The tournament style format may help the Tigers with the club bringing a full contingent of players. The boys are excited to start the year with a couple of wins under their belt. Coach Mick Coysh is busy preparing the troops for the road trip and in anticipation is running two practices a week leading up to the games. APRIL 2011Don't Fear the Sport, Fear the TigersThe 2011 season got off to a big start with the team's first official training session and annual Black-White scrimmage. The coaches had the opportunity to evaluate a huge turnout of fresh talent and Footy savy veterans. It was finally great to see the 'rust' get knocked off some familiar faces and to see what the new blood has to offer. Early rookie of the year candidates like Dara, Roger, Sabastian, Landan, Joel, Jeff, and Alton were stand out players during the evenly contested event. Returning leaders Paul Duncan, Ross Pleban, Matt Sherman, and Scott Bradley spent large parts of the game dominating. The already strong competitiveness within the squad will undoubtably lead to a great year for Tigers supporters and a run at a championship season for the club. The next practice will be on Saturday at 1:30 PM at Baileywick Elementary - bring your yellow/black reversible tops and/or a white shirt. New people - please wear/bring a red shirt.MARCH 2011Start of Season Festival Announced!This year the first practice will be held alongside an intramurual game. The always popular Black v White Jumper (Jersey) game is a great way to knock the rust off your joints and throw yourself into game action.The first session starts with a practice lead by coach Michael Coysh then all present will be split into two groups. The day will be held at our usual practice venue, Balleywick Park in north Raleigh. The boys are getting together to watch some college basketball and marvel at the fitness levels of the players post pre season conditioning.The good times roll at 8PM onwards. Please bring your own party pants as the club is running low on supplies. See you there!FEBRUARY 2011Dates Announced: Practice & Limited Game Schedule Finalized2011 may be the most exciting, and challenging, season yet. February 2011 | Raleigh, NC -After much discussion with various conference and out of conference teams, a limited game schedule has been announced. Further games will be announced prior to the first practice, Saturday April 2nd at 10:30 AM. Like last year, the club will hone their skills in North Raleigh. JANUARY 20112011 Season Kick-Off and Australia Day PartyTo kick-off the 2011 Season and to celebrate Australia Day, the NC Tigers hosted a party!Raleigh, NC -The Tigers organized a season kick off launch, as well as observing the sacred Australia Day holiday recently. Held at Natty Greene's, the party was well attended by both young and old Tigers, as well as family and friends. After munching on some food, we listened to Mr. Adam Boom Boom Barabasz, who is also known as President Boom Boom, speak on this years game, travel, and social plans. 2011 will be an exciting year with great home and away games planned. To register with the club in 2011, you need to pay your player (or supporter) dues. This ensures you go on our master playing list for the year. Included in the dues is registration for every game and practice in 2011 (except Nationals which requires a seperate USAFL mandated registration), away game accomodations, and concessions on 2011 merchandise. The North Carolina Tigers are again proud to host this growing event. The 2011 Classic benefits the students of AMF. All the details are listed below. We do hope you can join us for this very enjoyable and worthy day.

Start: Registration at 1 PM, Shotgun start at 2 PM

Where: River Ridge Country Club (Website)

This is a rain or shine event so prepare accordingly! The day is 'Captains Choice' format. A catered dinner and awards ceremony follows play. Cart, green fees and range balls are included in your registration.

This event is limited to the first 144 who register.
